Teaching english to speakers of
other languages (TESOL)

The Opportunity

Whether or not you have training or experience in this area, TESOL is a course that will equip you with skills that can open many doors of opportunity in restricted access nations, and among our many multicultural neighbours other nations.

The Challenge

Over half the population of the world lives under governments that restrict the entry of foreign religious workers. Although regular missionaries are not encouraged, people with nation building skills, such as English teachers - are welcomed. For approximately 60 nations in the world, being a skilled worker is the major means of gaining entry. For 33 nations, it is the only means of entry.

Course Content

The course content is designed to give you the necessary skills to begin teaching English straight away. The six-week intensive course includes such topics as:

  • Biblical principles for language training
  • Linguistics
  • Theories and styles of learning
  • Cross-cultural orientation
  • Classroom skills
  • Syllabus and curriculum design
  • Integrating language skills
  • Test and evaluation

Program

The program is from 9 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday, comprising about 100 hours of lectures and small group presentations. Includes oral and written assignments and assessment. Some personal study during evenings and weekends will be necessary.

Practical

The practical side of the course entails an outreach in Vanuatu. This takes place the last three weeks of the course and involves real life teaching opportunities and cross-cultural training. Past students say that this part of the course was most invaluable and challenging.
