HANDS Ministry

HANDS: Helping A Neighbour Develop & Serve

Our HANDS ministry is all about helping those in need. Churches and charity organisations have been generous in giving quality used clothing, household items and money towards school fees that have been distributed here in Vanuatu. Many of the Ni-Vanuatu people have benefited from the generosity of others more fortunate than themselves.

Vanuatu is a developing nation, and is one of the poorest countries in the Pacific with 40% of the nation's population living in poverty as defined by the United Nations. The population is rapidly growing: 60% of the population is under 24 years old. Vanuatu is vulnerable to earthquakes, cyclones and tsunamis.

Health:

The Vanuatu health system lacks qualified local health personal, health services and community education is subsequently limited especially in rural areas. Infant mortality and disease is high with problems caused by malnutrition, parasites, malaria and respiratory infections. In remote areas the child mortality rate is 1 in 6.

Education:

While the majority of children attend primary school fewer than 20% of students attend secondary school. Problems associated with a lack of qualified teachers and the high cost of education for the Vanuatu family limit progress in education.

Our HANDS Programs include:

  • Building Water Tanks
  • Distribution of 2nd hand clothes, health & hygiene products, books, bibles & Christian literature
  • Teaching English
  • Running Health Workshops
  • Primary Health-care Treatment
